05.08.20
Adam Greene, a partner with Davis Wright Tremaine, and Joanne Charles, an attorney for privacy and regulatory affairs at Microsoft, presented a deep-dive session with practical takeaways regarding the subject of AI and healthcare privacy laws.
AI has the potential to improve the quality and lower the costs of healthcare, but often requires access to vast quantities of medical information to do so. This session explored how healthcare privacy laws such as HIPAA apply to the development and use of AI, including issues such as whether development of AI potentially qualifies as "research" and the prohibition on the "sale" of protected health information.
