SEATTLE – JANUARY 28, 2020 – The second notable litigation partner to join Davis Wright Tremaine this month, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Diggs joins the firm’s White Collar, Investigations & Government Controversies practice. Diggs, who will be a partner in Seattle, has more than a dozen years of federal criminal and civil regulatory experience, with a particular focus on healthcare, in addition to having previously worked in private practice.

"We have seen a significant increase in matters demanding the deep experience Matt has in civil and criminal proceedings, particularly with respect to healthcare fraud and False Claims Act litigation," said Rob Maguire, chair of the litigation practice at Davis Wright Tremaine. "Matt deepens our bench with his exceptional record of handling complex proceedings. His in-depth understanding of these areas of the law and the Department of Justice will help our clients resolve matters successfully."

Diggs played a leading role in many of the largest and most high-profile white-collar investigations and prosecutions of the past decade in Washington. As a senior member of the Complex Crimes Unit in the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington, he tried 11 cases to verdict and resolved an equivalent number before trial in a range of areas, including health care fraud, environmental crimes, investment fraud and tax prosecutions. Since 2012, he also served as Criminal Healthcare Fraud Coordinator for the Western District, overseeing coordinated investigations among law enforcement agencies in multiple districts and overseas.

"Davis Wright Tremaine has built the leading litigation team in Seattle," said Diggs. “I look forward to working with them, including my former colleague from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mark Bartlett, to help our clients find solutions to their most challenging issues."

Diggs began his legal career as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Anthony J. Scirica on the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia. He then spent three years in private practice as a litigation associate with Perkins Coie. He has conducted dozens of evidentiary and motion hearings in federal district court and has represented clients in seven matters before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Diggs received his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, with honors, and his B.A. from Amherst College.

Diggs marks Davis Wright Tremaine’s second significant federal government litigation hire this month, following David Gossett, the former deputy general counsel of the Federal Communications Commission who joined the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Consistent with the firm’s strategic plan, Davis Wright Tremaine has focused on building a leading set of core practices and encouraging a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Since 2014, the firm has seen significant and steady growth in several key performance metrics, outpacing the vast majority of the Am Law 100. The firm’s gross revenue was up almost 10% last year, the firm’s sixth straight year of record financial results.
