Ability, integrity, and service to others – these are the three pillars on which John Davis, Davis Wright Tremaine’s founder, built the firm. He once famously said, "…unless we are serving mankind to the top extent of our ability and putting our best talent into that service, what good is life?" Pro bono wasn’t just a part of his vision to better humankind and the community, it was central to the firm’s existence.
Seventy-five years later, the firm’s pro bono and social impact work remains impactful, cutting edge, and celebrated. In 2018, our attorneys and staff devoted over 26,000 hours, valued at $14 million dollars, to working on a diverse range of pro bono matters on behalf of those who couldn’t afford to have their voice heard in court or didn’t have the funds to hire counsel. These cases were complex, interesting, meaningful, and transformative – not only the client, but also the attorneys that gave of their time and talent.
The firm’s participation in pro bono work spans the firm’s eight offices, coast to coast. We collaborate and support legal service providers, partner with our clients on pro bono opportunities and community service endeavors, and are thoughtful contributors to the community. In this way we are not only changing the way we do business, but how we give back.
John Davis’ public service was extensive, and our attorneys strive to honor his legacy by making pro bono a comprehensive part of their practice. The firm’s program will continue to champion all those who needs access to justice the most, not just those who can afford it.
