Camilo Echavarria is a fixer—he handles his client's employment problems so that they can focus on their business and do what is most important to them. Camilo gives practical advice to his clients on how to deal with and manage litigation in a way that best serves them. He does not over-litigate. Instead, Camilo works up the cases quickly, provides concrete case assessments, and makes strategic decisions to further his client's goals.

For over 20 years, Camilo has worked with large and medium-sized employers in California to defend them in employment lawsuits—from single-plaintiff to class action cases. He also conducts internal investigations and provides his clients with practical employment advice in their day-to-day operations. Camilo helps clients navigate California's complicated employment laws while understanding the need to run a profitable and successful business.

Camilo specializes in defending and advising clients in the entertainment, healthcare, financial services, and retail industries. Camilo's clients include Amazon Studios, Big Indie Pictures, Warner Music Group, Providence Health & Services, Sonic Healthcare, Amazon.com Services, and Dollar Tree Stores. With two decades of experience including as in-house counsel for NBC Universal, Camilo has firsthand knowledge of cost-effective ways to partner with clients and provide responsive, results-oriented counsel.

Camilo is a champion for diverse attorneys. He is the Chair of the firm's Executive Committee, and a member of the firm's Diversity Executive Counsel that oversees all diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the firm. Camilo also has served in leadership roles at the Hispanic National Bar Association, the California Minority Counsel Program, and other diversity-focused organizations.

Practice Highlights

Class action and multi-plaintiff defense

Defending class action cases regarding all aspects of California's wage-and-hour laws, as well as claims brought under the Unruh Act and California's Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA). Camilo has extensive expertise with claims related to meal and rest breaks, overtime, pay stub violations, penalties, bonuses, off-the-clock work, business expenses, independent contractor, joint employment, improper classification of employees, and gender price discrimination.

Employment advice and counseling, and confidential investigations

Counseling clients to develop policies and practices to manage risk, including advising on termination, leaves of absence, workplace investigations, handbooks, and timekeeping and pay practices. Working with boards of directors, human resources departments, and top executives in conducting thorough and confidential investigations.

Single-plaintiff litigation

Defending clients in hundreds of single-plaintiff employment cases throughout California. Successful results include obtaining summary judgment, defense verdicts at trial, and very favorable settlements. All but one summary judgment victories have been upheld on appeal. 

Camilo specializes in defending claims of race/gender/disability discrimination, retaliation, whistleblower retaliation, wrongful termination, failure to accommodate, and other similar claims. Camilo further specializes in defending companies and individuals accused of sexual harassment or sexual abuse.
